Yesterday’s Tiger Beer Singapore Chilli Crab festival was a DISAPPOINTMENT.
The only thing Singaporean about it is the queuing up for the FREE goodie bag and the queuing up for the food!
Chicken rice was too salty! The Char Kway Teow was bland. We could only taste the oil and chilli! Yucks! The Chilli Crab was ok.. not that bad but could be better. The lion dance was pathetic! The lion was so small… a Singaporean boy (about 8 yrs old) said it’s a dog! HAHAHAHA! There were no cymbals just drums! I wish i’d taken a pic of that “dog” but i was too busy complaining to Husband about it.
Please lor STB! If you want to have such events, please fly in the best hawkers from Singapore and let them serve REAL Singapore food to the people!! And also maybe fly in the No.1 lion dance troupe from Singapore and not hire some dodgy troupe that has a small lion that looks like a dog! Oh and with a big drum and cymbals please! Not a little drum that the drummer could strap over his shoulder. It’s not a snare drum!!
ARGH!
I felt it’s a total misrepresentation of Singapore!
Anyway, we left after finishing our food and walked around Spitafields market and went to Absolute Vintage. It’s so big! I think it’s a Vintage Heaven to Vintage lovers!
We went to Portobello Market and it was fantastic! Brilliant! Hog Heaven! Almost wanted to get a flat cap but it was 20quid.. couldn’t bear to pay that much for one but came home to check that it actually cost 65quid! DOH! But it was a bit too big for my small head though.. ah well. Oh and we chanced upon this nice little malaysian cafe called Makan. We ordered Char Kway Teow cos we were really disappointed by the one at the festival! Anyway, this time, it was much better! We were both really happy! Too bad there’s no cockles in it..Oh, The malaysian waiter was really impressed when Husband could pronounce Char Kway Teow perfectly! hehe
Back to Portobello Market….
I was looking at some cool boots at a stall when Husband reminded me that I still have a pair of boots that I’ve never worn and the stall owner turned round to me and said.. “Rule #1! Never bring your boyfriend with you when you go shopping! Especially to my stall!” LOL! It was so funny. I agree with her.. which is what I might do next time.. hehehe Or I’ll leave the Husband at the Makan cafe while i walk around the market.. 😀
Might go write a letter to STB now… or maybe after my Brain Training and er.. maybe after playing Hotel Dusk Room 215. I’m close to solving the mystery!!

we went today, and it was disgraceful. half an hour to queue up to buy food, half an hour to queue up for something else (not even sure what was inside), no thanks, we went to curry down the road.
i really doubt they had fresh crab anyway, and anyway you could get exactly the same food from the restaurant it’s normally cooked in without waiting for an hour. Nothing special, nothing cultural, just pathetic.
And the area is not suitable for a festival. We went to Innocent Festival in Regent’s Park, and they’d got a huge amount of space, about 20 different food vans, people selling and exhibiting things, lots of activities for children, a large music stage with live music. If a fruit juice company can do it, the Singapore Tourist Board should manage it.
This was just some alley in Brick Lane with a load of weird people hanging around and not enough room. Totally pathetic. We would have been better going to Chinatown and buying our own crabs and cooking at home.
Makan is enak btw, but not exactly convenient for Brick Lane

Hey Matthew! When we left for Portobello market, the Queue for the food was really long. Actually there were some more food stalls in the boiler house which has no queue! The organizers should have directed people to those stalls to ease the queue!
I think this is bad planning.
I want to try more stuff at Makan.. that will give me an excuse to go to Portobello Market hehehe

i only went to makan once, it’s a nice place just cheap and cheerful, but the trouble is it’s the kind of place you don’t really go ot of the way to find.
The best Malaysian restaurant in London is Awana, we usually go there, they have half price deals online, otherwise the Chelsea pricing is just a bit too much.

hahha…at least they have stuff like that where you are. In the US, people dont even know where Singapore is! Sounds like fun though – all the other places you were mentioning. It would be fun to come visit you sometime.
My teeth healing well but i dont think i’ve lost weight. I had to force myself to eat so that i can eat the painkiller without vomitting. Sucks!

Hey matthew, have you tried C&R restn at Chinatown? It’s not bad. I like the nasi lemak and the prawn mee. I’ll have to try Awana someday.
Christine, please come visit me someday! We can go to Portobello Market! And lots of other cool places too!! You can stay with us!!
Oh…You have to grind the painkiller into powder, mix them with water and drink them! YUCKS…

If you can find the early (usually 5 to 6am) time, try Billingsgate Market to get big and cheaper crabs.
Thanks for the post at my blog.
